Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, has published its paper “Ten Steps to efficiency in Flood and Coastal Risk Management” which draws on Balfour Beatty’s broad experience of protecting the UK’s coastlines and floodplains.
The paper outlines ten points that could enable commissioning authorities, government and the infrastructure industry to achieve efficiencies in delivering and maintaining flood defences, without compromising on quality or safety. These range from undertaking schemes simultaneously enabling resources to be shared, through to improving procurement processes such as employing collaborative framework agreements, like those offered by Scape Group.
The company has delivered more than 75 coastal protection and flood defence projects worth over £500 million for clients such as local authorities and the Environment Agency. Since 2010, approximately 100,000 properties have had their risk of flooding reduced significantly due to Balfour Beatty’s work on flood prevention schemes.

Balfour Beatty is also carrying out the £1.2m Hightown Coastal Defences Phase 2 scheme for Sefton Borough Council. Recently completed work includes the £9m Lyme Regis Coast Defence scheme and the £12m Morpeth Flood Alleviation Scheme.
