Balfour Beatty triumph at the Scottish Property Awards

3 March 2017

UK

Balfour Beatty’s development at Holyrood in Edinburgh has been awarded Student Accommodation Development of the Year at last night’s prestigious Scottish Property Awards 2017.

The development has been designed, built, funded and maintained by Balfour Beatty working in close partnership with the University of Edinburgh. The project has provided 1,180 student beds and is located within the World Heritage Site of Holyrood in the City of Edinburgh. The University granted a 50 year lease to Balfour Beatty to develop the new residences, all of which have now been completed and occupied by students in a phased process between 2014 and 2016.

The residences primarily accommodate overseas post-graduate students who are studying at the University. As a part of the overall development, a large café, an outreach centre and a retail unit have also been built fronting onto the main Holyrood Road. These facilities can all be accessed by the public and local community as well as students and the outreach centre has become the focal point for the University’s community-based activities and continuous professional development courses.

Ian Woosey, Investment Director, Balfour Beatty Investments said, "We are delighted to win this award as it provides clear industry recognition of what the Balfour Beatty group can deliver. We are proud of the facilities that have been provided at Holyrood, particularly the unique, self-catered Residence Hall in Holyrood North, where up to 480 students can cook, dine and socialise together."
