8 July 2016

UK

Balfour Beatty, the international infrastructure group, today joined with Highways England and Patrick McLoughlin, Transport Secretary, to celebrate the official opening of the A1 Coal House to Metro Centre improvement.

The project delivered new parallel link roads between the Lobley Hill and Gateshead Quay (A184) junctions and increased lane capacity on the A1 main line from two to three lanes in each direction from the Metro Centre to Coal House junction.

Commenting on the opening, Stephen Tarr, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty Major Projects, said, “It’s great to see this important piece of transport infrastructure at completion. The team has managed to deliver exceptional improvements to what is increasingly considered the North East’s most used commuter route.

The work we have undertaken will tackle congestion, and significantly reduce journey times.”
